Hillwalking and Hiking in North Wales

Snowdonia in North Wales is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The National park here offers fantastic opportunities for everyone to get out and enjoy the mountains. From short walks through pine forests, to wild camping expeditions, it is a playground for outdoor people. The courses offered below are examples of what I can provide. There is such a vast area to cover, with so many cool places like the long sandy beaches of the Llyn, and the wilderness of mid Wales, that it is best for you to contact me to discuss your plans and what you want for the course.

Duke of Edinburgh - expedition training

£200 per group per day with overnight camp, 8 people max per instructor
As a certified Assessor of D of E bronze, silver and gold Expeditions, I can provide weekend training courses for your expedition assessments. The trips will take place on the hills which could be used for your assessment, and are therefore huge benefit in familiarising you with the hillside that you are likely to have to navigate. Camping, cooking, walking, navigation and all aspects of the assessment are covered. If there are more than 8 people, I'll require another instructor, so rates will rise to £350

3 Peaks Expeditions (3 days or 24hrs!)

Prices to be confirmed
A great trip, whether for personal accomplishment or charitable causes, this is quite an achievement, I have deliberately kept the cost very low. Here is a sample itinerary:
21:00 Friday - Meeting in Llanberis, North Wales. Drive to Ben Nevis
06:00 Saturday - Guiding up and down Ben Nevis. Drive to Scafell Pike
17:00 Guiding up and down Scafell Pike. Drive to Snowdon
02:00 Sunday - Guiding up and down Snowdon
06:00 Finish and go for a massive breakfast.

14 x 3000ft Peaks - Snowdonia's round (3 days or 24hrs!)

1 person = £500, 2 people = £250, 3 people+ = £200
This route takes you through from Snowdon, over the Glyderau, then into the Carneddau, finishing up Foel Fras. It is a big undertaking to do this in 24 hours and requires experienced fit people to make it in time. This trip includes driving assistance in getting up and down the roads, so the hard work can be saved for the peaks. The Snowdonia society will also give out certificates for people making all 14. Good times (once you are finished!)

Guided Walks - Snowdon, other peaks and Coastlines

£150 per group per day (£220 9 people)
Experience this beautiful mountain with the assistance of a guide. Having an instructor with you on Snowdon is an invaluable asset, it generally saves people a lot of time and can really help avoid sticky situations! We also have a wealth of knowledge of the local area, it's rare flora, the animals that live here and the history of the mountain. Not only is having an instructor a much safer option and therefore more responsible, it's also far a more interesting and educational day. If you are not keen on the crowds that Snowdon sometimes draws, there are a host of equally stunning peaks and amazing coastlines to be explored.

Hiking and Walking Explorer - hills skills course

1 or 2 day Course. £150 per group per day
This course is a skills based course aiming to teach all the navigation tricks you'll need to stay on track. You need no previous experience, just be very keen to learn. We'll cover all the elements on the hill, and get to see some amazing places along the way. This is a great course for people thinking about bigger adventures in the hills and a fundamental step before taking any qualifications in leading and being responsible for groups.

Advanced Mountain Navigation Courses

1 or 2 Day Course with Night Navigation; £180 per day per group (max 6)
For people wanting to improve their navigation skills in the mountains, enabling you to safely head out no matter what the weather, or if you are taking any trips to the Alps this summer. This course is ideal preparation for what you might encounter. We cover all aspects of advanced navigation, specifically steep and rocky terrain on a variety of map types. It is ideal for aspirant Walking Group Leader, Mountain Leader and Mountaineering Instructors, and for the BASI Mountain Safety and EMS Assessments. Too many people get lost and into trouble in the hills, don't be one of them!
The course document for the BASI specific course can be downloaded from here: www.terryjameswalker.com/NAV.pdf

Tailor your own Day or Course

Days tbc and £tbc
If you have not seen anything meeting your needs in the above courses, then please get in contact and we can easily provide a bespoke package. I would also be happy to travel to other areas and cost would need to be considered. Generally a similar amount as the above course, with my time going out at about £130 a day.

Further Information...

Equipment Lists
Walking Boots, Waterproof top and trousers, and some warm clothing. For navigation I recommend the Silva Type 4 compass, and maps will be discussed relevant to the courses.
Venues and Weather
The courses above are often specific in their venues, but for navigation courses we can select some amazing terrain and locations to suit any ability. It really is a fantastic area for alpine preparation and assessment courses, which is why most of the mountaineering instructors and guides in the UK are assessed here.
